Christmas Mystery with Dark Humor: The Game's Afoot in Bonn

A snowy country house, festive champagne, and a murder that shakes society to its core: The Bonn Players bring Ken Ludwig's crime comedy The Game's Afoot to the stage at Brotfabrik Bühne Bonn on November 29, 2026. The English-language production combines classic detective suspense with fast-paced farce and a keen awareness of the depths behind the theater scene.

When Sherlock Holmes Falters

Christmas 1936: Broadway star William Gillette, famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, invites his former ensemble members to his magnificent country house. The dramaturgy begins with an apparently elegant festive gathering but turns the salon into a crime scene. When a guest is murdered, Gillette decides to take the investigation into his own hands.

The production thrives on the enticing duplication of acting and reality. An actor embodying Sherlock Holmes uses his theatrical skills, powers of observation, and knowledge of dramatic patterns to unmask a real culprit. Amid false identities, hidden motives, and surprising twists, the line between role and reality blurs.

Crime Comedy with Precise Timing

Ken Ludwig builds the tension like a classic whodunit and also relies on rapid dialogues, misunderstandings, and comedic exaggeration. The direction approaches the material with a sense of rhythm: every revelation changes the perspective, every reaction shifts the power dynamics in the space. This creates a stage experience that intertwines murder investigation with slapstick, Christmas atmosphere and stage intrigue.

The acting talent of the Bonn Players draws the audience right into a festive salon, whose polite surface increasingly shows cracks. Expect pointed verbal duels, surprising appearances, and a lively theater atmosphere where audience reactions fluctuate between tense attention and liberating laughter. Staged violence, a knife attack, gunshots, flashing lights, and sudden loud effects are all part of the comedic stage happenings, according to the event information.

English Theater with an International Profile

The Bonn Players are an English-speaking community theater group that has contributed to the cultural life of Bonn for decades. The ensemble is dedicated to classical and contemporary pieces from the English-speaking world. With The Game's Afoot, this international orientation meets a material that brings together theater history, popular detective fiction, and festive entertainment in a concentrated production.
