Chessboard instead of playing field: Bonn is looking for its best school teams
On Tuesday, December 1, 2026, the auditorium of the Hardtberg School Center will transform into a stage for tactical finesse, focused gazes, and exciting duels at the chessboard. In the Bonn School Chess Championship, students from Bonn's primary and secondary schools will compete in teams against each other.
Six Rounds Full of Strategy and Excitement
The tournament is designed as a team competition in up to eight rating classes. Six rounds will be played according to the Swiss system. Depending on the rating class, the thinking time ranges from 10 to 13 minutes per player, plus 2 seconds per move. Each game requires precise opening knowledge, forward-thinking tactics, and nerves of steel in the endgame.
The Path to the NRW Finals
For the best teams, it’s about more than just trophies and medals: The winners of the respective rating classes qualify for the NRW finals of the school chess championships. The three best teams in each class will receive trophies or medals, and all participants will receive a certificate.
For Primary and Secondary Schools
The tournament is primarily aimed at primary schools as well as schools of secondary level I in Bonn. Rating classes are provided for grades 1 to 4, girls' teams, and other age and school classes. One substitute player is allowed per team. This connects the competition with sporting ambition, team spirit, and youth development.
Early Registration Matters
Participation is free of charge. Entry and registration begin at 08:30 AM, the competition starts at 09:30 AM and is expected to end around 03:00 PM. Since the number of participants is limited, the order of registration will determine participation. Priority is given to Team 1 of a school in the respective rating class. Registration is only possible through the participating schools using the form from the sports office; the registration deadline is November 17, 2026, or earlier if the maximum number of participants is reached.
Stadium Atmosphere at the Chessboard
Where usually crowd noise and floodlights dominate the scene, a special game field tension arises in the auditorium: the quiet ticking of the chess clock, tense fan chants from the team rows, and the decisive move that tips a game. Those who experience chess as a sport recognize the struggle for space, initiative, and the next advantage in every formation, every pressing, and every tactical maneuver.
The Bonn School Chess Championship offers young talents an intensive competition day with a clear perspective up to the state level. Anyone who wants to experience the dynamics of school chess live and cheer on the next generation at the board should mark December 1, 2026, at the Hardtberg School Center.
