West African rhythms, dance, and community in Bonn
The 12th Jump for Joy Festival brings the energy of West African dance and music culture to the Bonn Hardtberg Cultural Center on November 28 and 29, 2026. Since 2011, the festival founded by Diene Sagna has connected people from Africa and Europe in a vibrant multi-day experience focused on Sabar, Djembe, live percussion, and communal dancing.
Movement, rhythm, and festival atmosphere
Open dance workshops for different skill levels are at the center of the experience. International artists teach Sabar and Djembe – from the first basic steps to complex choreographies. Live drumming sets the rhythm and creates an immediate connection between lessons, stage, and community feeling.
International lineup with a West African focus
The artist lineup includes Rose Mendy, Helene Sagna, Aida Diop, Khady Sarr, Pape Doudou, Issa Sow, and Diene Sagna. On Saturday, Sabar workshops will feature Rose Mendy, Helene Sagna, and Aida Diop. Sunday continues with Khady Sarr, Issa Sow, Pape Doudou, and Diene Sagna exploring the world of Sabar and Djembe.
Show, Senegalese food, and open dance session
Saturday evening is open to everyone, even those not participating in workshops. After entry, Senegalese food will be served at 7:30 PM. At 8:00 PM, the Yaye Dib Dance Company will perform. This is followed by the Taneber dance session: a communal moment full of movement, percussion, and closeness to the West African festival culture.
Festival organization and participation
The Jump for Joy Festival was created by Diene Sagna in memory of his mother, the dancer Yaye Dib. The event aims to be a place of artistic exchange and is open to all age groups and skill levels. No prior knowledge is required. Registration is necessary for workshops, and spots are limited.
Conclusion: A weekend in the spirit of rhythm
The Jump for Joy Festival combines dance workshops, live percussion, stage art, and culinary experiences into an intense multi-day event. Those who want to experience West African dance up close, learn new movements, and let themselves be carried by the energy of the festival community will enjoy a weekend in Bonn filled with strong rhythm and personal encounters.
