Remembering with the Pen: Anne Frank – Erased Forever
A quiet room, a sheet of paper, and the weight of history: The inclusive drawing workshop Anne Frank – Erased Forever invites on March 4, 2027, at the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn to engage artistically with memory, exclusion, and the crimes of National Socialism.
History Becomes a Drawn Narrative
At the center is the artist book by Andreas Maus. The Cologne artist narrates the life story of Anne Frank in dense, four-color ballpoint pen drawings: from the carefree childhood of Anne and Margot to the family's flight to the Netherlands to the cruel fate in the concentration camp. The dramaturgy of the images connects personal life stories with the political and social conditions of the Nazi regime.
Art between Empathy and Demand
The staging of the workshop does not rely on distance but on an immediate encounter with images. Delicate moments of remembrance meet disturbing representations of violence, persecution, and torture. It is precisely in this contrast that the artistic tension lies: Andreas Maus draws with great empathy but does not shy away from the brutality of history. The stage design here is the paper, the acoustics emerge from the scratching of the pen, and the lighting mood shifts between reflection and inner restlessness.
An Inclusive Form of Mediation
The drawing workshop is aimed at students in special schools, young people and adults in care facilities, non-profit workshops, as well as people from elderly care and day care facilities. The limited group enables a concentrated theater and art atmosphere, where perception, conversation, and personal creation are interconnected. The stage experience arises not from acting art but from active engagement with visual language, culture of remembrance, and historical responsibility.
Andreas Maus and the Power of Drawing
Andreas Maus works at the KAT18 art house in Cologne and, in addition to drawings, develops artist books, paintings, sculptures, and collages. For his artistic work, he was awarded first prize at Euward 8 in 2021. His artist book Erased Forever. Anne Frank was published in 2023 by StrzeleckiBooks and includes 152 pages with numerous color illustrations.
A Morning that Resonates
The three-hour event combines cultural education, artistic work, and historical remembrance. It opens a protected access to a heavy topic and makes visible how art can create personal perspectives on violence, human dignity, and social exclusion.
Conclusion: Memory Needs Its Own Voice
Visitors can expect not an ordinary museum visit but a concentrated, inclusive stage experience between drawing art, history, and shared reflection. Those who wish to engage with Anne Frank and the memory of the Nazi crimes not only by observing but by thinking creatively and immediately will find a compelling access in this workshop.
